Banned? What?! I thought this novel was a classic!
Because of the extensive use of the N-word and racism shown in the novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been banned from school all over the nation. It was first banned by the Concord Public Library in 1885 and from then on, numerous boards of education have requested that teachers stop reading and teaching this book. In 1963, Philadelphia replaced the novel using an adapted version that "tone[d] down the violence, simplify[d] the Southern dialect, and delete[d] all derogatory references to Negroes". Following their footsteps, people have been trying to write a clean version, so this great American work of art can be enjoyed by students and learn from it.
Originally, the book was banned because it "showed too great of a friendship between a white boy and a slave". It is reasonable to say then, that during the times of slavery, the novel brought up many controversies and went against popular sterotypes thus, making it a book people wanted gone.
